How to create a WiFi hotspot without a router
Windows 7 introduces a feature called Virtual WiFi that lets you create a personal WiFi network with almost any WiFi device (even a USB WiFi dongle!) on your laptop or computer, which could then be used to share your internet connection with other devices like smartphones, media players, wireless printers, netbooks, and other laptops and computers.
- Windows 7
- Connectify — The freeware we’ll be using to create the hotspot. The installer is around 2MB in size.
- A WiFi-enabled device, which maybe your laptop or your PC (with a WiFi card or dongle). I use the Netgear WG111 Wireless USB Adapter.
Setting up Connectify
Download Connectify from the link and install it. Run Connectify and click on the ‘Easy Setup Wizard’. The wizard is extremely simple, so I’ll skip the instructions.
Once it is set up, you can start your hotspot. Once the hotspot is started, you can connect to that network using any WiFi-enabled device. Enjoy!
