KMPlayer – The Best Media Player

Media players are almost an indispensable piece of software that everyone uses on a routine basis. But with a plethora of formats cropping up now and then, it kinda becomes annoying to track down codecs and install them. Of course, you’ve got popular codec packs like KLite and Storm Codec. But popular players like VLC and GOM can play a lot of formats using internal codecs. But then, VLC has trouble playing Real media (or does it play them at all?) and GOM crashes with DVDs. For a while, MPC (Media Player Classic) seemed like the best option. But, like I’ve said before, I’m a sucker for eye-candy, and MPC isn’t the prettiest ones out there. And then there was KMPlayer

Some of KMPlayer’s best features are:

  • Very lightweight. (thats something I always look for!)
  • Extreme (with a capital ‘E’ customizability.
  • A really nice default skin. (the interface changes color everytime you launch it, a nice touch I would say)
  • Nice icons for all possible formats (video, audio and even for subtitles)
  • Internal codecs (and also choice of using external ones) for almost all formats on the planet.

The setup file is around 12MB and setup is simple. After setup completes, it takes you through a wizard (users of GOM would be surprised at the similarity) that helps you set up basic settings like performance and associations. After the wizard completes, you can start using KMP right away! I have a huge movie collection in a variety of formats like DivX, MKV, XViD and the likes, and KMP plays them all without any issues. I’ve been using it for around a month and yet to encounter a freeze or a crash! Go ahead and download this amazing player

I’ve attached a few screenshots of the player (though not one while playing a movie). I’va actually missed out on a lot of screenshots (like that of KMP’s CoverArt) but do get this player (Download link at the bottom of the article).

  1. I already have this player but i just wanna say that ur way of reviewing it is cool…. Jus can focus more on the technicalities…good work and keep going

  2. @Mahesh: Thanks Mahesh! Planning to write a lot more tech tips and reviews

  3. But will KMP provide that excess sound boost-up provided by VLC? This special feature of VLC has helped me in lot of occasions where some files has poor sound qualtiy…i’ve only few files of real format..even i’ve some movies in real formats (.rmvb)..but their video and audio quality will be of poor quality..so i prefer not to download them..so these formats bothers me less..i find VLC to be the perfect media player for me!!

  5. @NLV: Uhm I don’t think KMP actually supports that volume-boost thing. But its always good to have VLC at hand too. Some of my (unfortunate) friends have had problems with KMP (like rendering issues). Maybe you could post on the KMP help forum and get help

  6. for a couple of years The KMPlayer seems to me the best existing free video player
(the best audio player for me is foobar2000 with “facets” add-on)

But do you know more about the KMP’s costomisation preset “KMP Wizard”? – it looks good, but I think it can get better: maybe it is upgradable? or there are other such “customisation presets” available to download for KMP that you might know of?

    THANKS

  7. @cipricus: What kind of customization are you looking for exactly? Sorry for the late reply, I was a bit busy with my project

  8. Well, tardy, just a thought. I stumbled upon this link – FFmpeg’s Hall of Shame while going through the pages related to KMP. Was just surprised to see the long list .
