Don’t ever buy a Nokia!
Yup, you read that right. Do not ever buy a Nokia phone. Have your eyes set on some great Nokia phone with an awesome set of features? Better look for a Sony Ericsson or even better, try not buying a mobile phone at all! (Trust me, getting away from connectivity is pure bliss.. erm.. for a while!).
But why this sudden animosity towards Nokia? Well ‘cuz those bitches tried to cheat me! I’ve always been a Nokia person – my first was a 6030 (which probably would’ve developed some problem and made me write this post much earlier if it had not been stolen!) and then came my treasured possession – my 5610 XPressMusic phone. My classmates called me ‘the guy who holds on to his beloved phone much tighter than dear life’ (seriously). I had been extremely careful of my phone, but still, there came the dark days..
- The phone’s slider just came out of the phone one day
Heading to a couple of online forums I found out lots of 5610 owners had the same problem. Ha! - Soon, the infamous “random restarts” began. The phone would restart at will.
- And then one day, the screen turned upside down and I saw all weird colors on the screen like a pop-art-piece gone wrong. In an hour, my phone switched off and I was never able to switch it on again

- Now at this point I have one more month left before my 1-year warranty expires.
Next logical solution – Run to the nearest Nokia Care center. Here comes the bitchy part I was talking about. They take a look at the phone and then say a component is borked (the Flexi cable, to be precise) and quoted 3000 rupees to replace it. How so? Well the damned Flexi cable simply isn’t covered by the warranty ![]()
I searched for the Flexi cable on the Interwebs and came across an Indonesian electronics dealer who was selling that. Check it out here. A conversion from Indonesian currency to India rupees makes it roughly 1000 rupees. The price quoted by the Nokia asswipe is quite a far stretch, I should say.
Frustrated, I next took the phone to the Alwarpet branch of Univercell, where the service was supposedly better (better, not good). They too told me that the Flexi cable needs to be changed, but did not charge me anything because of the warranty period. But (you saw the catch coming, didn’t you!) they said I had to wait for 15 days for the cable to arrive in stock. Sure!
So I waited for 15 days and then when I walk over to Univercell, they send me back saying that I have to wait till the end of the month – which is another 15 days. That means my warranty almost runs out by that time. Expect either a happy post or another rant by then ![]()
I wish I had gone for Sony Ericsson instead. My sister and dad both own SEs. My sister got a T610 years back (it ran its course and faded into our cupboard gracefully) and then got a W700 (which she’s been keeping for 3 years now!). My dad owns an S500 – it had developed a motherboard problem which got fixed without bills or any questions asked at Sony World. Bravo!
But now what if it does run out and they don’t get my phone fixed by then? I’m learning how to make bombs at home. Beware.
